Budapest Travel Information

A beautiful city, peaceful yet bustling…

A relatively ‘new kid on the block’ as a city-break destination, Budapest is rapidly catching up with its longer-established rivals as the place to go. A big metropolis, but intimate and friendly, where ancient blends with modern, along the banks of the River Danube.

There are plenty of other capital cities built on the banks of a river, but the width and majesty of the Danube at Budapest just takes your breath away. Even more exceptional is the perfect contrast between the right and left banks. Buda is built upon hills - the feet of two of them – Castle Hill and Gellért Hill – almost stand in the water. Facing it is Pest, as flat as a pancake.

You’ll love this vibrant city; it throbs with life morning, noon and night and you get the feeling that something interesting is happening round every corner, and finding those corners is really easy, too. If you don’t fancy walking, there’s a huge choice of transport – bus, tram, trolleybus, train, underground railway, cogwheel railway, funicular, forest railway, horse-and-trap, chair-lift, boat, bicycle and on Margaret Island “bringóhintó” family cycle cars – Budapest has them all!

Shop in the markets and craft shops for locally-made goods, including lace, paprika and the famous Tokaj wine, and when eating out try some of the Hungarian specialities including goose liver and goulasch, plenty of red meat usually served with potatoes.
